Chapter 39

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Somehow, Mal had fooled us all and taken control of Dad again. He had fooled Ben, too.

Mom’s mouth had fallen open and Lukas was staring at Dad, as if he couldn’t wait for him to drop his guard. And where had Dad gotten that gun?

“What’s this all about, Simon?” Jesse asked. “Mal is still with us, isn’t he?”

“Mal is quite an interesting name.” Dad smiled, but it wasn’t his usual smile. It was the kind of smile you would see on the face of a cold-blooded killer. “I like it. Just drive where I tell you and no one gets hurt.”

How could Mal have fooled Ben like that? Is Ben dead?

“Can you at least tell us where we’re going?” I asked.

“We’re going to meet some acquaintances, someone who is very interested in your father’s time machine. And now that I have both of them plus all of you as hostages, it’s going to make for a very lucrative deal.” He glanced out the window. “Take a right on Seventh Street.”

“You’re doing this for money? What about the ways this discovery could help humankind? Did you ever think of that?”

“I don’t care about humankind, I care about me.” He looked out the window again. “Take a left on Constitution Avenue.”

“You’re a traitor to the human race, Simon.”

“In case you haven’t noticed, I’m not part of the human race. Take the right fork onto Virginia Avenue.”

Then, Mal eyed everyone in the car and grinned. “The Iranians have a different view of the human race, one that is more in line with mine. The Spike machines, along with the nuclear arsenal they will soon possess, will give Iran power that not even the Great Satan can fight.”

I didn’t like the sound of that, especially when it came from the mouth of my own father. I wondered what Dad must have been thinking, trapped in there with a maniac, unable to do anything about it. It had to be hell. I suddenly felt hot tears welling up in my eyes, but held them back with all my willpower.

Soon, we were winding through the beautiful tree-lined corridors of the Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway, but it felt as if we were headed for the heart of darkness.
